It’s a challenge being an employer, especially when it comes to finding and keeping good staff.

Thankfully there are initiatives available to help you attract staff, including incentives to hire apprentices.

And if you’re an MTA member, our specialist HR advisory team can help with all your staff employment needs – from recruiting and retaining staff through to performance management.

Have a role to fill?

If you're an employer who has an automotive position to fill, you can list if for free on our job listing page or on MITO’s website or browse their list of jobseekers who are looking for work now.

StartUp® for secondary school students

StartUp® is a MITO-led initiative that gives interested and engaged secondary school students the opportunity to spend one or two days a week in an automotive workshop where they will gain practical, hands-on experience.

As an employer, you may also choose to offer students work in the school holidays, or for those leaving school, you may even find your next apprentice.

To become a StartUp® employer, fill in the form and they'll be in touch.

Apprenticeship Boost Scheme

Apprenticeship Boost is a Government payment to help employers keep and take on new apprentices and is available to apprentices in their first 24 months of study.

It was introduced to allow apprentices to keep earning and training towards their qualifications as the economy recovered from the impacts of Covid-19. The payment is made directly to employers.

You can get the Apprenticeship Boost if your apprentices are enrolled in, and engaged in, an apprenticeship programme approved and funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). An apprenticeship programme is either a New Zealand Apprenticeship or a Managed Apprenticeship.

It is intended that the Apprenticeship Boost Extension will be maintained.

MITO Scholarships

The MITO scholarships have been developed to assist aspiring and successful graduate learners to progress their skills and knowledge. The MITO scholarship programme contributes funding towards training programmes and business management qualifications.

Hiring migrants

If you're thinking about recruiting from overseas there's a lot to consider. Immigration NZ has all the information and resources you’ll need to help you find, hire and retain migrant staff.

Staff shortages in key sectors around the country has seen the Government introduce a Green List of roles, making it easier for employers to hire and attract migrants for specified high-skilled, hard-to-fill occupations, with guaranteed residence pathways for eligible people.

Only highly-skilled roles that have been identified as being in demand globally and there is an ongoing shortage in New Zealand are on the list including:

Automotive electrician ANZSCO 321111

A certificate at NZQF Level 4, or higher qualification, which includes the credit and knowledge requirements of one of the strands of the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering (NZQF Level 4)

Diesel motor mechanic (including heavy vehicle inspector) ANZSCO 321212

A certificate at NZQF Level 4, or higher qualification, which includes the credit and knowledge requirements of the New Zealand Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering (NZQF Level 4)
