Starting your driving journey is an exciting milestone. Whether you’re studying for your theory test or you’ve just bought your first set of wheels, MTA is collating this information to make the journey easy to understand and to help you stay safe and legal on New Zealand roads.
Your journey begins with the theory test, a computer-based, 35-question multiple choice test based on the New Zealand Road Code.
Once you have practised driving for at least six months and feel confident behind the wheel, you can sit your restricted practical driving test.
The final stage of the graduated licensing system is where you earn total freedom on the road.
Choosing your first car is a big decision. It is easy to get caught up in the look of a car, but safety and mechanical history should be your priorities. MTA expertise is here to help you make a smart investment.
The Government has confirmed several updates to the car driver licensing system to make it cheaper and more straightforward, while keeping everyone safe on our roads. Most of these changes will take effect on 25 January 2027. Until then, you must follow the current rules to get your licence.
