Industry Insights and Forecasts in Groundbreaking Research

MTA recently commissioned the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) to undertake a thorough examination of the country’s automotive industry and fleet.

This work, entitled The Current and Future State of the New Zealand Vehicle Fleet and Industry, has been carried out as part of MTA’s commitment to be the voice and representative for the automotive industry.

NZIER has provided a detailed, informative and thought-provoking analysis with implications for members and industry.

Full access to the report is provided free of charge.

The research contains a number of key findings:

  • The New Zealand vehicle fleet continues to grow and there is no sign that New Zealanders are giving up on vehicle ownership or driving
  • Although the New Zealand vehicle fleet has grown, the electrification of the fleet has been slow
  • The fleet will electrify at an increasing pace, especially after 2035, but internal combustion engine vehicles continue to make up a large proportion of the fleet even in 2045
  • The New Zealand vehicle fleet is old and getting older, limiting the rate at which new vehicle technology is taken up in the fleet
  • Three trends (electrification of the fleet, increased technology in vehicles and a reduction in vehicle ownership) will have implications for industry over the next twenty years.
